Following Bowker BMW’s partnership with Ciceley Motorsport’s British Touring Car Championship Team – Car Gods Racing, we want to keep you up-to-date with their progression throughout the season. Below you can find the race reports from each race weekend throughout the season. Race reports will be added the week following the race.

Three top-10s for Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport in Brands Hatch thriller

In front of a huge television audience of ITV1 for the first time, Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport scored three top-10 results in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at the weekend, despite having to cope with tricky weather conditions and a technical drama on the way.

With all cars in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship running a new hybrid system for 2022, qualifying became of extra importance as drivers Adam Morgan and George Gamble would have to balance their usage of the extra power generated for their ideal qualifying lap on the 1.2-mile track. Adam would have 4.5 seconds usage per lap while George would have 12, but both cars struggled with the system malfunctioning. In spite of the lack of extra power, Adam still qualified an outstanding fourth fastest with George a hugely impressive seventh in his second-ever BTCC qualifying session.

Raceday dawned overcast and rain was falling as the cars came to the grid. Both Adam and George played it safe and elected to run on wet tyres, with Adam having 15 laps of hybrid use and George 22 laps from the total race distance of 24. On a wet track, the two Car Gods-backed cars experienced early hybrid system activation issues and hence the engineering team elected, mid-race, to switch the cars to a different engine map and the hybrid system then came alive allowing Adam (who admitted to making a bad start) to battle to sixth place and George to take 14th after he dropped down the order as others with hybrid power passed him early in the race.

“It was really slippy,” remarked Adam after the opening race. “The track was changing constantly and that was our first time in the wet with this set up so I’m quite happy overall.”

Said George: “It was my first time in the wet and I made a good start but then got caught up in traffic and I couldn’t get through and got roughed up a bit! That was a bit of a welcome to touring car racing I think, but the car felt good.”

Drama befell Adam leaving the garage for race 2 as the car refused to pull away when first gear was engaged. A bearing had come out of the back of the flywheel causing the input shaft to the transmission to become off-centre, thus jamming the clutch. It meant that Adam couldn’t take the start as the team toiled to trace and rectify the problem. George upheld the team’s honour and blasted from 14th to ninth in greasy conditions once again.

“I made a good start again and then the pace tailed off a bit, but some more rain came and that helped us find pace. In the end, though, the rear tyres seemed to drop away and that made it difficult towards the end, but I gained places and it was all good experience,” he said.

For the final race, broadcast to a live ITV1 audience, George started fourth on the reversed grid with Adam 28th and last. Both charged into battle, with Adam picking off the traffic ahead and caught the similar BMW 330e M Sport of Stephen Jelley on the line, missing 13th place by just six-hundredths of a second. In doing so, Adam incredibly overtook 14 cars! George ran fourth early on with a gaggle of front-wheel drive cars around him and eventually the traction that they boasted allowed them to move ahead of him, seventh place being his reward, along with the Jack Sears Trophy win for the weekend.

“That was an enjoyable race,” said Adam, “because it showed what we are capable of and how good the car is. Missing race two was obviously disappointing and as it affected the race three grid it was always going to be tough, but the car was mega in the last race. I’m feeling really positive about things.”

Ash Gallagher, Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport’s Commercial Manager, said: “Yet again we have proved that we have front-running pace. The weather this weekend made the racing a bit of a lottery, but in every session, wet or dry, we were competitive. Adam’s problem was something that our guys had never seen before, but once we had traced it we were able to get him back on track for race three, which considering the very tight turn around between the races this weekend was a monumental effort from the guys in the garage, so we go to Thruxton felling really confident.”

Adam lies eighth in the championship standings, with George ninth and Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport is fourth in the BTCC Teams Championship. The Independents Championship has George second and Adam fourth, with Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport second in the Independent Teams title race. The Jack Sears Trophy, for drivers who hadn’t scored an overall podium result before this season, is led by George after three JST wins thus far.

The next three races in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship are at Thruxton, Hampshire, on May 28/29, with qualifying on Saturday shown on and the raceday action live on ITV4.

Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport sizzle in Donington BTCC hybrid debut

Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport is celebrating a superb start to the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Donington with a podium finish, two Independent category wins and a massive step forward for the Accrington-based team.

The new era of the BTCC requires all cars to run a hybrid unit that regenerates power and allows drivers 15 seconds per lap of hybrid deployment. It has been a learning curve for all the teams in pre-season testing and remained a challenge over the race weekend, but Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport was on top of the new technology, and Drivers Adam Morgan and newcomer George Gamble were relishing the opportunity to go racing and fight for wins and podiums in 2022.

The weekend started with two free practice sessions that allowed the teams to work on car set-up for the all-important qualifying session, Adam and George were in a confident mood. After an early stoppage, caused by Dan Cammish splitting a fuel rail and igniting, the teams had just under 22 minutes to set their grid-deciding lap times. George wowed everyone with a time fifth fastest, just 0.219s off pole position, while Adam would line up a relieved eighth after he had a fuel pump fail which prevented a second run. Fortunately, his first effort was good enough to keep him up near the front of the grid in P8.

An optimistic team went to the grid ready for the first ever BTCC race with hybrid technology and it began with a frantic lead battle and a safety car period. As the leaders tripped over themselves and delayed each other, Adam cleared a frantic battle and caught the leading group to finish fifth while George’s BTCC debut resulted in sixth place after a highly impressive drive. The Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport BMW 330e M Sports also took a one-two finish in the Independents’ class which was another boost to the squad.

The cars lined up fifth and sixth for race two, but Adam was in strife even before the race started, as a tooth had worked loose in the transmission in race one which prevented the engagement with the hybrid system and with no spares available, he had to complete the remaining two races without the extra power available to everyone else. Adam battled to a remarkable fourth place, “helped by me having a big gap to the pack behind,” but George was a star of the race as he bolted to second place on the run to the first corner and finished in third place overall as well as winning the Independents’ category.

“I didn’t think it could get better than race one,” said George, “but I made a good start and had Adam behind me to protect me from the pack. It feels amazing!”

George was penalised in race three with a drive-through penalty for jumping the start and finished 20th, while Adam, again forced to run without hybrid, finished in sixth place after a tremendously consistent day which showed the pace of the cars and the giant step forward the team has made on the engineering side.

Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport’s new Commercial Manager Ash Gallagher was delighted with the results: “We have had an absolutely fantastic weekend. Two Independent wins are a great boost and so is the fact that the cars were so solid on pace in all three races. We are all thrilled for George getting his first podium in only his second BTCC race, while Adam’s results without hybrid show how good his racecraft is and how well engineered our BMW 330e M Sports are. Steve Farrell and the team have worked really hard over the winter and the whole team, as well as our commercial partners, are buzzing about the weekend. We can’t wait for Brands Hatch!”

The Donington results put Adam fifth and George ninth in the championship standings, with Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport second in the Teams’ Championship. Adam leads the Independents’ Trophy with George third with Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport the leading Independent team. The BTCC’s Jack Sears Trophy runs for drivers who haven’t scored an overall podium before the start of the season, and although George now has an overall podium to his name, he is second in that competition as well.

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship bursts back on track at Brands Hatch, Kent, on May 14/15. Qualifying will be shown live on Saturday on with the raceday action starting on ITV4 but including two BTCC races on ITV1.

Bowker BMW have extended their partnership to support a North West-based pursuit of the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship.

Last year, Bowker BMW became the new official parts provider for the Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport Race Team.

Bowker BMW will also continue to support Ciceley Motorsport with a sponsored car for Blackburn-based driver Adam Morgan. The eye-catching matt black BMW X4 has been signwritten with Bowker BMW and Ciceley Motorsport logos. The car is predicted to clock up over 5,000 miles throughout the North West and between UK circuits throughout the racing season.

Bowker Motor Group director Chris Eccles said: “We loved being involved last year and we are excited to be involved again. We will help with parts and provide Adam with the new BMW X4. Last year, the team’s first season back in a BMW, saw podiums and wins for Adam in a solid race season. We’re keeping everything crossed for more placings for the team in 2022.”

Last season was Ciceley Motorsport’s first season driving BMWs. Adam Morgan enjoyed two wins including a double podium at Oulton Park. After their first season driving BMWs, the team will hope to finish even higher than their 9th place in the team standings this season.

Competing in his 11th season in BTCC, Adam Morgan is upbeat about the team’s prospects for the approaching campaign. Adam said: “Bowker BMW was a big part of the team’s success last year. It is wonderful news to have the local dealership on board once again. Travelling between races and testing can be long and arduous; even more draining than the races themselves sometimes! The new BMW X4 will play a crucial role in the team logistics and that will be a huge help for me and the team.”

Following an extensive pre-season testing programme for the Car Gods Ciceley Motorsport team, the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season will get underway at Donington Park on 23rd-24th April.

The team has just revealed their line up for the coming season which, this year, includes BTCC support race front runner George Gamble. George will partner Adam in their pair of Car Gods backed BMW 330e M Sport Saloons for his debut season in the Championship.

Adam added: “It’s fantastic to have George join the team for this year, his pedigree in rear wheel drive machinery on the TOCA package is second to none, and after our first couple of meetings together he has fit straight into the team dynamic. With a learning year under our belts last season with the BMW’s, we are in a brilliant position to have a proper run at the title in 2022”.

Bowker and Ciceley have been pillars of the North West business community for over 100 years and almost 50 years respectively.

Lancashire automotive retailer Bowker BMW has announced a new long-term partnership with Lancashire further education provider, Preston College.

The new automotive technologies partnership will help apprentices learn a breadth of knowledge, skills and behaviours in their specific area. The aim is to help apprentices to become confident in carrying out maintenance and everyday repairs on vehicles, cars and motorcycles, through to more complex diagnostics and servicing.

Preston College is currently the largest apprenticeship provider in its local area. Award-winning Bowker Motor Group’s automotive retail franchise portfolio includes BMW, with centres in Preston and Blackburn.

Preston College is committed to embedding industry-led curriculum across all of its provision types. The technical skills programme partnership with the Bowker Group will provide valuable experience and development opportunities that will ensure learners become sought-after within industry.

The development of key provisions types, combined with the underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours delivered in an education environment, will allow the pipeline of industry-ready learners to progress into permanent employment or an apprenticeship within the organisation, whilst adding value to Bowkers’ existing workforce.

Jonathan Rogan, head of business at Bowker BMW in Preston, said: “As a Lancashire-based family business we are always looking for meaningful ways to invest in the county’s future.  Our new strategic relationship with Preston College is the perfect collaboration between two organisations who share the same values and vision for local learners.

“We’re especially excited to bring the unique strengths of both organisations together. Bowker Motor Group has a rich tradition for investing in local apprentices. We have several managers who started with us as apprentices. With Preston College’s help we can continue to create exciting careers and provide an even better learning environment for our apprentices.”

The partnership will see the two organisations work together to provide apprentices with high-quality training, delivery and assessment, whilst continuing to use the College’s industry-standard workspaces.

Mark Taylor, Head of School for Engineering and Automotive Technologies at Preston College, added: “With the relentless pace of change and the increasing number of electric cars, the automotive retail sector has witnessed considerable innovation over recent years. Our partnership with Bowker Motor Group will help us to keep ahead of the game by offering real life learning experiences with the latest automotive technologies in a commercial environment.

“There’s no doubt that partnering with one of Lancashire’s most-famous family businesses will offer our apprentices the chance to deliver first class outcomes whilst developing their skills in high quality, technology-rich learning spaces.”

A Lancashire woman has won a new mobility scooter in a competition to discover a deserving winner.

More than 250 Motability customers entered a competition organised by Bowker BMW in Blackburn. The first prize was a Pride Go-Go ES8 Boot Scooter donated by Blackburn Modern Mobility.

Ashraf, the husband of winner Safi, claimed the prize on his wife’s behalf and explained: “I would like to thank Andrew Holden at Bowker BMW Blackburn and Modern Mobility for selecting my wife and awarding her with this fantastic mobility scooter.

“We feel honoured to have won this competition.  I am hoping that this mobility scooter will encourage my wife to be independent and provide her with a better quality of life”

Andrew Holden from Bowker BMW and Russel Curry from Blackburn Modern Mobility were on hand to present Ashraf with his wife’s new scooter at the Bowker BMW centre on Trident Way in Blackburn.

For Bowker BMW, motability specialist, Andrew Holden said: “Congratulations to Safi and Ashraf on winning the first prize. Previously, we ran a similar competition as a prize draw. This time we judged nominations from friends and family who felt they knew someone who deserved the scooter the most.

“Special thanks to Modern Mobility for generously donating the mobility scooter. We work together whenever we can to help people with disabilities to keep moving. This competition was a great example.”

This competition challenged anyone in Lancashire who knew a friend or family member who would benefit most from a free mobility scooter. They were asked to share a couple of sentences that describe the reason they should win and the kind of impact that winning a free scooter will have on their lives.

For Blackburn Modern Mobility, Russel Curry, said: ”We were happy to link up with Bowker BMW to support this competition. Safi was a worthy winner. Thank you to Ashraf for sharing the impact this scooter will have on his wife’s life. Hopefully, Modern Mobility can continue to work together with Bowker Motability to help more people who find it difficult to get around.”

In 2019, Andrew was crowned best Motability specialist in the country. The award recognised Andrew as the best from over 18,000 motability specialists in the country and acknowledges consistently high standards of service and support to customers of the Motability Car Scheme throughout 2018.

A Preston-based BMW service engineer has become the only technician in England to retain one of the toughest technical accreditations in the motor trade seven times in succession.

Harold Bowden has officially passed his master technician accreditation for the seventh time. He is currently one of only 66 BMW master technicians in England, but the only one to hold the accreditation for so long.

BMW requires all master technicians to re-qualify for the accreditation every five years. Harold Bowden’s success – after working with Bowker for over 45 years – means that, by the time Harold’s next accreditation is due, he will have been a Master Technician for over 35 years.

Harold said: “I love the BMW technology. So, when I immerse myself in the details – it doesn’t feel quite so much like hard work in the way others might think. Add to that, I have the support of a great employer in Bowker Motor Group. They always back me. So, those two things combined make a big difference when I challenge myself to achieve the Master Technician accreditation.

“Yes. It’s quite a high level of knowledge – but it needs to be. I do a lot of training in my own time – at weekends and evenings. And fortunately, I’m genuinely interested in BMW cars so it makes it a little easier for me. Technology is always changing. There are new hybrids and the all-electric models coming through; so there are always new engine developments or new gadgets to widen my mechanical knowledge.”

In the tests, Harold successfully completed the industry-recognised examinations featuring a range of online, practical, diagnostic and theoretical examinations. The test now also includes a coaching exercise and customer handling situations.

Harold has also achieved the title of AAE (Advanced Automotive Engineer) which is a special engineering grade awarded by the IMI. And in 2005 Harold was also one of the first technicians to receive IMI ATA Master Technician.

In 2015, BMW UK recognised Harold’s achievements by presenting him with a Lifetime Achievement Award from BMW UK. He was the first technician in England to achieve the accolade.

Stewart Rose, Bowker Motor Group Group Services Manager, said: “Harold is an inspiration to us all. I, myself, have worked for Bowker Motor Group for over 36 years. So, I know just how hard Harold has worked to stay at the top of hsi game for so long.

“The other technicians know he is always available to help with any challenges they face. It is a massive benefit to have someone so knowledgeable as part of our team. Congratulations Harold. And we look forward to celebrating your seven accreditation in 5 more years!”

Last year, 27-year-old Bowker Motor Group’s Callan McGuigan from Fulwood Preston was awarded BMW Senior Technician status after a gruelling day-long exam at the BMW training centre at Wokefield Park, Reading.
