ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING AT HOME.

The great thing about electric car charging at home is that it’s easy to do. There are different home car charging points that you can use depending on what suits you best, so you can be sure you’re always ready to hit the road.

HOUSEHOLD PLUG.

You don’t actually need any complex installation or unit to charge at home.
Simply use the standard charging cable and adapter included with your all-electric MINI to plug into any conventional household 230-volt power socket (SchuKo).

2.5 hours of slow charging will be enough for your next commute of up to 50 km.

A whole night using the household plug will be enough on average to give you several days of city driving.

FASTER CHARGING WITH A WALLBOX.

A wallbox offers you a convenient, faster alternative to the standard mains supply, if you want to charge your EV regularly at home.

More power: a dedicated, 3-phase 11 kW wallbox connection will generally give you up to 3-times faster charging time. So your All-electric MINI can be fully charged within around 3.5 hours.

Safety first: a wallbox is specifically designed with overheating protection and a fault circuit breaker to allow for a constant high load.

Convenience: there is nowhere more convenient to charge your car than those places you spend most time during the day or overnight.

To install a wallbox, you will need the expert assistance of an approved electrician. If you are interested in installing a MINI Wallbox, we would be happy to help you locate such a specialist in your area. MINI now offers highly attractive options which give you the chance to finance a wallbox with your All-Electric MINI at competitive rates.

You can find more information about the wallboxes we offer right below.

Charging your MINI at home is just as easy as charging anything else. Whether it’s through a conventional 3-pin plug or a home wall box, find everything you need to know by watching our useful home charging video below.

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING POINTS.

RAPID CHARGING.

The fastest charging points are typically found at motorway service stations and on main routes. They use a DC supply to charge rapidly at a rating of up to 50kw. Using this method, the MINI Electric can charge from 0-80% in as little as 36 minutes.

FAST CHARGING.

Fast charging points are the most common and deliver an AC supply at a higher rating of either 7.4kw or 11kw. While MINI Electric can use both, it has a maximum rating of 11kw with an AC supply. Which means a full charge would take 3 hours and 30 minutes.

SLOW CHARGING.

Slow charging points are less common and tend to be older devices. They deliver an AC supply and are rated at up to 2.3kw. If you have enough time, MINI Electric can achieve a full charge in 12 hours. You can also use this method by charging with a standard 3 pin plug at home.

PUBLIC CHARGING.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PARKING TIME.

Ever more supermarkets, shopping centres and DIY stores are offering free use of their AC, and DC, charging stations or triple chargers at their parking facilities. Many hotels are also keen to be seen as more environmentally aware and making more effort to accommodate guests with electric vehicles. Multi-storey car parks are also offering electric parking spaces at no extra cost.

Your employer might also consider setting up charging facilities for you and your colleagues if space allows.

TYPE 2 CHARGERS.

Many AC public charging stations require you to bring your own Type 2 cable. They offer the same power as a wallbox athome and you can charge a MINI Electric with the same 11 kW, while the MINI COUNTRYMAN plug-in hybrid uses 3.7 kW. Your MINI includes a Type 2 cable, enabling you to charge wherever you go. Take a look at the other cables available below.

CCS FAST CHARGERS.

Wherever you’re heading off to, your all-electric MINI couldn’t be better equipped. You can also take advantage of fast charging of up to 50 kW via the Combined Charging System (CCS). This is the standard for rapid charging in Europe.

The upper part of the plug resembles the Type 2 plug, while the more powerful conectors below allow for direct current (DC) with a much higher voltage and amperage. AC power has to be transformed by your vehicle, while DC power directly charges your battery.

CCS chargers include the charging cable and no additional hardware is needed. The combination of practically-sized charging capacity and stable charging performance of your MINI ensures you can take many ways to reach your destination – and always have several charging options within reach.

Please note that plug-in hybrids usually don’t support CCS as the smaller battery can’t take as much power.

Charging your MINI in public couldn’t be easier. Whether you’re connecting through AC or DC charging, find everything you need to know by watching our useful home charging video below.

MINI CHARGING.

MINI Charging gives you instant access to one of the largest public charging networks and will allow you to seamlessly connect to over 11,000 electric vehicle charging stations in the UK. It’ll also give you access to stations in all other MINI Charging markets within Europe. Currently in the UK the MINI Electric network is connected to charging points from key operators such as our partner Pod Point, ChargepointNetwork UK and others, as well as high-power charging stations available via IONITY.

In your MINI Electric, you’re never far away from a public charging point. And there’s more than one way to find them.

MINI NAVIGATION.

The MINI Electric on-board sat-nav makes it easy to find nearby charging locations using voice control or touch screen. With live traffic updates, MINI Navigation always finds the fastest way.

MINI CONNECTED.

Take control with the MINI App. Plan routes in advance based on your battery usage. Keep track of your available charge. And find charging points fast for longer journeys or top-ups.

ZAP-MAP.

Download this handy ev charging app. Zap-Map helps you find more than 15,000 public charging points across the UK. Plan routes and find charging points, tailored around your battery usage.

faq'S:

Upon account creation you are presented with a single basic tariff, named Flex tariff.

The Flex tariff provides access to all included network operators without any monthly membership/subscription fees. This base tariff is most suitable for occasional users as the customer only pays for the charging sessions they complete. The price for the charging session is determined by the individual charging point operator and therefore varies dependent on the charging point/network used. The current pricing for each charging point is shown directly in the MINI Charging app or website and it is recommended that the customer always check the prices in operation prior to commencing the charging session. Typical prices range from £0.18-£0.42 per kWh for AC/DC charge points.

For more frequent public charging users, you can choose to add optional packages. Whereby for a monthly subscription fee, each package provides more attractive/preferential pricing for charging sessions conducted on those networks.

bppulse package

The bppulse package is suitable for frequent users of the bppulse network.

For a monthly subscription fee of £7.85 you can access preferential pricing per/kWh when charging at the included bppulse charging points. There are currently >5,000 MINI compatible bppulse charging points available in the UK

NEW VEHICLE OFFER

New vehicle customers who have purchased a new fully electric or plug-in hybrid MINI vehicle through Bowker MINI and whose vehicle handover took/takes place on or after 01 April 2021 are eligible to receive the “bppulse” package for 12 months without subscription fee if they have registered for the Flex tariff.**

**The offer is valid once for a specific vehicle from 1stApril 2021 and cannot be transferred to other vehicles or owners. After the subscription fee exemption expires, the regular Flex Tariff conditions will be applied. This promotional offer applies to the package subscription fee only, usage costs remain the responsibility of the customer. This promotional offer does not apply to used vehicles.

The MINI Navigation system shows all charging points within the MINI Charging network.

The MINI Charging App is available for both Apple iOS and Android.

The My MINI App.

To start and end a charging session at a MINI Charging partner charging point, either the RFID card or mobile app may be used, depending on the capability of the charge point.

Yes of course. Simply use the steadily expanding public network of MINI Charging or other charging stations as available, such as from your employer. The MINI App* or the navigation system in your vehicle shows you public charge points in the vicinity.

Attractive public charging tariffs and personalised offers are also available exclusively to MINI customers.

The time taken to charge electric cars (depending on the cable or charging station) takes longer with alternating current (AC), while direct current (DC) is significantly faster. The new MINI Electric, for example, is charged from 0-80% after approx. 35 minutes when charged with 50 kW at a Rapid charging (DC) station. These are commonly found at motorway service stations. Alternatively, using a BP Pulse wallbox, the charging time is between 3 – 5 hours.

The MINI Hatch has been awarded ‘Most Fun Car to Drive’ at the 2021 Auto Trader New Car Awards.

Erin Baker, Editorial Director of Auto Trader, said: “With their short wheelbase and nippy, cheeky character, it’s a deserved win. Owners commented on the “go-kart feel and acceleration” and the fact that MINIs “don’t take themselves too seriously”.

The MINI Hatch, which took the same award in 2019, was decided the ‘Most Fun Car to Drive’ by 148,000 UK car owners who took part in a comprehensive survey to understand the honest opinions of those who have bought, driven and lived with their new vehicles. They rated their cars across different criteria including reliability, performance, appearance and running costs, as well as detailing their overall satisfaction with the car and if they would recommend it to others.

David George, Director, MINI UK said “Being fun to drive and putting a smile on the driver’s face is one of the most important parts of MINI’s DNA, so to officially win Auto Trader’s ‘Most Fun Car to Drive’ is a brilliant and very fitting award for the MINI Hatch.”

The MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW is the new Safety Car for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship race series. As such, it connects the brand’s electrified future with the rich racing history of John Cooper Works. The car was created out of the new MINI Electric as part of an unprecedented collaboration between MINI Design, BMW Motorsport, the FIA and the Formula E.

Electric drive meets John Cooper Works.

“We have already shown how well driving fun and electric mobility go together with the MINI Electric,” says Bernd Körber, Head of MINI. “However, the MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW goes at least a step further and blends the performance character of the John Cooper Works brand with electric mobility.

This extreme version of the MINI Electric has been developed as the Safety Car in the Formula E, so is clearly not intended for use on public roads. But it does reveal one of the directions we could take with the electrification of the JCW brand. For me, the message is clear: electrification and John Cooper Works are a good fit.”

Dynamism maximised – the exterior design.

The exterior of the MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW has been purpose-built for life on the track and represents the most dynamic interpretation yet of a MINI with all-electric power. “The design is an exciting symbiosis of technical precision and emotion,” explains Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design. “Here, function dictates form, and many design elements have been shaped by technical considerations.

For example, we worked closely with our colleagues at BMW Motorsport to develop the form of the wheel arches and front and rear aprons, and the optimisation programme for them included weight-saving measures. This visually striking, technically precise design language gives the car its pervasive sense of emotional engagement and excitement.”

At the front of the car, classic MINI icons such as the circular headlights and hexagonal radiator grille create the familiar, easily recognisable MINI face. At the same time, signature John Cooper Works elements, such as wheel arches adapted to the car’s track width and the deep front apron with additional front splitters to the left and right, enhance the sporting visuals of the front end. The blanked off “radiator grille” and MINI Electric logo point to the electric “heart” of the Safety Car.

As virtually no drive system cooling is required through the upper area of the grille, the front end is largely enclosed to aid aerodynamics. The only exceptions are the area below the grille and the eye-catching, almost squared-off apertures for brake cooling. The Safety Car’s white flashing lights are integrated harmoniously into the bonnet. Characteristic MINI bonnet stripes extend over the roof to the rear end.

Showcasing MINI’s racing genes – the flanks.

The MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW also cuts an extremely dynamic figure from the side. The interplay of geometrically accentuated spats (with carefully placed aero edges) and sporty side skirts gives the car the appearance of powering forward even before it turns a wheel. Together with the increased-diameter wheels, which almost fill the wheel arches, these elements strengthen the time-honoured MINI “stance on the wheels”. The spats and spoilers are made – or more precisely 3D printed from recycled carbon fibre – in Oxford.

Yellow accent lines and surfaces on the aero elements (e.g. the spats, skirts and rear wing) provide a nod to the airflow optimisation taking place in these areas and add a visual flourish to the air deflectors and aero edges. The lightweight 18-inch forged wheels in bi-colour black-neon/orange design bring significant visual depth and added intricacy to the four-spoke items from the MINI John Cooper Works GP.

The respective colour worlds of the MINI Electric and John Cooper Works brand merge into a single statement here. The main body colour is a matt silver which extends back beyond the centre-point of the car. A high-gloss wrap with a two-stage colour gradient – from Highspeed Orange to Curbside Red metallic – then covers the rest of the body to the rear.

The contrast between matt and gloss surfaces brings extra smoothness to the silhouette, while the clear, diagonal separation lines between the different colours injects further dynamism. On the flanks, a chequered flag-inspired pattern shares the stage with a large MINI Electric logo, which can also be found in the radiator grille, on the roof and at the rear end. The Safety Car brief also brings regulations-specific and sponsor-related graphics, which add further visual intensity to the car’s racing character.

Broad and eye-catching – the rear.

The rear end in black and Curbside Red metallic uses yellow accent surfaces to extend the eye-catching design language from the front end and flanks, and makes an extremely modern and dynamic statement. The prominent roof-mounted rear wing with air through-flow and yellow accent lines also integrates the signal light unit and was 3D printed at Plant Oxford. The flared wheel arches accentuate the car’s wide track and transition seamlessly into the pronounced rear apron. The rear apron has cut-outs around the wheels, clearing the view to the higher-grip racing tyres. Between the wheels sits an unadorned diffuser. When the car is viewed from this angle, the accents in Energetic Yellow and lack of exhaust tailpipes identify this as a car powered by an electric drive system.

Reduced to the max – the interior.

The interior is stripped back to the absolute essentials; only the front seats remain. The driver’s area consists of a certified seat with six-point belt approved for both racing and road use, a steering wheel with minimalist-design carbon fibre impact absorber and a digital instrument cluster. The central information display makes way for a carbon fibre cover here to further reduce weight. The centre console houses the gearshift lever, handbrake and controls for the necessary signal lights – all in exposed carbon fibre.

The likewise pared-back carbon-fibre door panels with window and door openers contain cloth straps to make closing the doors easier. Another central feature of the interior is the welded-in roll cage, which maximises safety. And the remainder of the stripped-out interior structure is also painted in typical racing white (for functional reasons).

Bespoke 3D-printed parts for the interior.

The steering wheel’s minimalist impact absorber and the boost panel on the right-hand side of the wheel are high-quality, custom-made components, likewise the centre console cowling and door panelling on the driver’s side. Another highlight are the removable pads on the sport seat, which are likewise 3D-printed and whose innovative structure combines comfort, robustness and modularity. The thickness, hardness and colour of the pads can be adapted as required according to the physiognomy, weight and personal taste of the driver at hand.

Ready for the race track, helped by knowhow from BMW Motorsport.

Behind the visually powerful design of the MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW lies the expertise of BMW Motorsport. Rigorous adherence to lightweight design principles gives the Safety Car a kerb weight of approx. 1,230 kg – which makes it approx. 130 kg lighter than the standard MINI Electric.

The drive system – also based on that found in the MINI Electric – produces 135 kW and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft), which enables the MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW to sprint from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds (standard model: 7.3 s) and from 0-37 mph in 3.6 seconds (standard model: 3.9 s). Even more important for a Safety Car, though, are the mid-range figures. Here, the MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW showcases all the talents of its torque-rich electric drive system with single-speed transmission, enabling a 75 mph time of 4.3 seconds (standard model: 4.6 s).

The drive system teams up with racing coilover suspension (three-way adjustable for rebound, compression, height and camber) to deliver maximum go-kart feeling. Race-spec suspension control arm mountings, a 10 mm increase in track width, plus the four-piston brakes and wheels from the MINI John Cooper Works GP with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (size 245/40 R18) round off the overall package.

Premiere at the Rome E-Prix on 10.04.2021

The MINI Electric Pacesetter inspired by JCW will come into use in Rome on 10 April 2021 at the second event (Race 3) of Formula E’s 2021 season. At the wheel will be official Formula E Safety Car driver Bruno Correia, as BMW i Andretti Motorsport drivers Maximilian Guenther (GER) and Jake Dennis (GBR) battle it out for victory in their BMW iFE.21 racers.

“Agility, performance and a cool looking car. The MINI Electric Pacesetter Safety Car of FIA Formula E World Championship has got it all. Very fun to drive, it feels like karting”, said Correia.

A lot of MINI Electric is what you know and love about the MINI Hatch already. Its iconic design and legendary responsive handling. The innovative tech. The ability to customise it to your taste (did we mention the six handsome colour options available?). But the new fully electric motor takes things to a whole new level. So, if you’re looking for a car that’s all torque, as well as action, then let us introduce the latest MINI Electric. It feels better than ever, with immediate oomph thanks to instant torque. And it looks better than ever too. With a sharper, sleeker update to its legendary MINI look and, of course, that MINI Electric feeling.

REASONS TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO mini ELECTRIC.

Now MINI Electric is here, you can make the switch to electric without losing any of the things you love about MINI. Need any more reasons to make the switch to MINI Electric? Read on.

ELECTRIC COSTS LESS.

MINI Electric makes your money go further

The cost of electricity can be up to two thirds less than what you’re paying for petrol or diesel. When it comes to cost per mile, the news gets even better. Compared to a traditional petrol or diesel car, going fully electric could cut costs by up to three quarters or more. MINI Electric makes your money go further too. At just 4p per mile, it’s around 2.5 to 6 times cheaper than driving a petrol or diesel.

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING POINTS.

Charging MINI Electric is just as easy on the go. The UK network of public charging points is growing every day. And MINI Navigation will plan your route taking into account the 9,000+ charging points already available across the UK.

MINI have partnered with bp pulse, meaning MINI Electric drivers can charge up easily at over 7,000 public charging points using both AC and Rapid DC chargers.

MINI Electric makes your money go further.

FILL UP AT HOME.

MINI Electric makes your money go further.

With MINI Electric, you’ll wake up every morning raring to go. Just plug in to a standard home socket overnight to recharge the battery whilst you’re sleeping. If you want more efficient charging, we recommend installing a Wallbox at home.

CLEANER MEANS GREENER.

Bid farewell to traditional fuels and start living a little greener? With zero exhaust emissions, you’re creating less pollution as you drive. And by switching to a sustainable energy supplier, like MINI’s partner OVO Energy, you can reduce your environmental impact even more.

LOW MAINTENANCE MILES.

An electric car motor is less complex than a combustion engine. And because there are fewer moving parts, it means there’s less wear and tear, so maintenance can be kept to a minimum. When it’s time for a service, we can help you keep the costs down too with our simple monthly payment plans.

QUICKER, QUIETER.

One of the first things you notice when driving an electric car is how calm it feels inside. With no noise from the engine, you feel more relaxed and connected to the world outside. Without the need to change gear, accelerating feels smooth and effortless with instant torque from the electric motor. And when you put your foot down, there’s an immediate response and surge of speed that makes an electric vehicle ideal for city driving.

ZERO EMISSIONS.

As electric vehicles produce no emissions, they are exempt from Vehicle Emissions Duty (VED). In London, they are also exempt from the congestion charge, as long as drivers apply for the 100% discount. And exempt from the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) too.

SAVE WITH A GOVERNMENT GRANT.

MINI Electric has been given a Category 1 rating by the government, which means you can receive a £2,500 grant towards the purchase price. Plus, if you’re buying a MINI Electric for your business, there’s a BIK rate of 0% from April 2020.

FEELS LIKE ELECTRIC, LOOKS LIKE MINI.

A lot of MINI Electric is what you know and love about the MINI Hatch already. Its iconic design and legendary responsive handling. The innovative tech. The ability to customise it to your taste (did we mention the six handsome colour options available?). But the new fully electric motor takes things to a whole new level.

A charging solution for electric vehicle customers

We know that many Motability customers are interested in electric vehicles but are concerned with charging them. So, as part of the worry-free motoring package, the Motability Scheme are offering customers who place an application for full battery electric vehicles an ‘at home’ charge point at no additional cost, in partnership with BP Pulse.

If you don’t have access to off-street parking, then instead you’ll be given access to a network of charging points for easy on-street charging.

What costs are involved?

There are no costs for BP Pulse to supply and install a home charge point, but if there is work required to gain access to your electricity supply then you’ll have to cover these costs. Also, customers are responsible for paying for the electricity used to charge their car.

If you would prefer to use an alternative supplier you can do so, but this will be at your own cost. Motability insist that customers have some sort of provision in place before they deliver an electric vehicle, this is to ensure your continued mobility throughout your lease. If you are considering an electric vehicle you will need to have access to a charge point to recharge the battery and pay for the electricity that is used.

What will I need to do?

During your application for a full battery electric vehicle we will ask if you would like to take advantage of the charging solution. All you need to do is say yes, we will then pass your contact details onto BP Pulse.

You’ll then be contacted by BP Pulse directly who will arrange the provision of a charging solution.

You can discover the full range of cars on the Scheme here. If you are already a customer and are coming up to the end of your three-year contract, please contact one of our team and they will advise how to change to an electric vehicle.

Interested in Joining the Motability Scheme?

For more information about joining and possibly leasing one of the vehicles available on the scheme, we have Motability trained and award-winning specialists who are ready to answer your questions and help you choose your car. We’ll also guide you through the simple process and complete all the paperwork for you.

Richard Ingram, Editor of Carbuyer said “The MINI Convertible offers something different, as very few small cars are available with a soft-top these days. It’s just as fun to drive as the hatchback version and comes with lots of kit, a stylish interior and an affordable price. That’s why it’s our Best Convertible in 2021, for the fourth year in a row.”

Priced from £20,630 (OTR) the car has a cleverly packaged interior matched with high-level equipment as standard including a 6.5” infotainment screen, Bluetooth functionality with USB audio, Rear Park Distance Control (PDC) and LED mood lighting. The fully electric roof also opens and closes in just 18 seconds.

David George, Director, MINI UK said, “It’s a fantastic accomplishment to have won Carbuyer’s Best Convertible for the fourth year running. The MINI Convertible has outsold its rivals every year since its launch in 2016 and continues to put a smile on our customers’ faces, and this award is really testament to that.”

The MINI moments.
“MINI sees its future self primarily as an enabler of and companion for unforgettable times – what we might call ‘MINI moments’. The MINI Vision Urbanaut uses three curated MINI moments – “Chill”, “Wanderlust” and “Vibe” – to present a wide range of possible usage scenarios. The Chill moment invites you to catch a breath and pause in the here and now. The car becomes a kind of retreat, a haven where you can relax – or work with full concentration – during a journey. Wanderlust is the only MINI moment where the MINI Vision Urbanaut is being driven or driving with automated driving functions. The moment Vibe puts time with other people at centre stage – in every way”, adds Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design.  The exterior and interior change to reflect the MINI moment at hand and give the experience the best possible stage. An all-encompassing user experience design, sustainable materials and a purely electric drive system are additional ingredients of the overall concept.

The interior design – More Creative Use of Space.

As an innovative space concept, the MINI Vision Urbanaut was designed from the inside out. The designers created the spacious interior experience before developing the exterior, using floor plans, pieces of furniture plus wooden scale models to provide an indication of size. Over the course of the project, augmented reality was employed to create a digital model, which was then systematically optimised. Unusually tall for a MINI, but only 4.46 m in length, the MINI Vision Urbanaut provides an interior space that can be used in many different ways and offers a whole new ease of movement inside the car.

Electric drive system and automated driving functions also create new ways to use the interior.

Having been conceived from the outset as an electrically powered vehicle with automated driving functions, the MINI Vision Urbanaut has afforded the designers a greater level of freedom when creating both the exterior and interior.  “In 1959, the very first Mini ushered in a small-scale revolution in vehicle construction with its transversely mounted engine,” recalls Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design. “With the MINI Vision Urbanaut we have been able to rethink and increase the usable surface area inside the car even further in relation to its footprint.”

One space, a multitude of possibilities.

The interior of the MINI Vision Urbanaut provides the ideal environment in which to go on a journey, but is also the aim of the journey. Having arrived at the chosen destination, it can transform into a living room in just a few simple steps. Occupants enter the innovative cabin through a large sliding door in the side of the car. The cutting-edge slide and swivel mechanism is the ideal design for urban driving conditions where space is at a premium. There are no other doors on the driver’s side or front passenger side.

Driver’s area with “Daybed” and “Street Balcony”; “Cosy Corner” in the rear.

An extremely flexible four-seat layout provides the basis for the bright interior. The two front seats are designed to rotate, while the backrests for the generously sized seat surface in the rear can be folded manually (left rear seat) and turned around (right rear seat). When the car is stationary, the dashboard lowers and the driver’s area becomes a comfortable seating corner – the “daybed”. Added to which, the windscreen can be opened upwards when stationary to create a kind of Street Balcony. This enhances interaction with the car’s surroundings and creates an even more generous spatial experience.

The darker environs of the cabin’s rear section provide a quieter space – the Cosy Corner. This area invites passengers to enjoy some time to themselves. A textilecovered “Loop” extends over the seat bench and features the option of LED backlighting. Between Cosy Corner and the driver’s area is the open and airy central section of the car, which offers quick access to all seating areas. With the door open, it is even possible to sit on the floor. On the side of the car opposite the entry door, a small integrated table with a plant adds a finishing touch to the interior fittings. The table signifies the car’s new centre point – the place where passengers meet, face and engage with one another.

User interface and interaction design – “Analogue love, digital connection” as a guiding principle.
Intuitive, discreet user interface solutions allow conventional controls such as switches or buttons to be omitted. This creates a minimalist, cosy spatial experience while maintaining full connectivity. The principle of making things as simple as possible to use (“natural interaction”) is highlighted by the “analogue”, tactile, haptic experience of initiating a feature, e.g. the direct touch operation option in the Loop over the rear seat bench. The circular instrument is now positioned in the middle of the car – the new centre of the action – and brings information to the place where people meet.

The “MINI Token” – the digital-analogue interface for MINI moments.

The MINI Token is the centrepiece of the MINI Vision Urbanaut’s experience worlds. It is roughly the same size as a worry stone and activates the three preconfigured MINI moments – Chill, Wanderlust and Vibe – when placed in purpose-designed slots in the table at the centre of the car. Other MINI moments are conceivable, such as “My MINI moment”. Here, the MINI Token can be programmed to provide another kind of personalised experience, in which the user can configure their own preferred scenario of fragrance, ambient lighting, music, etc. and call it up directly at a later time.

The exterior design – the spirit of the brand in a new form.

The purist mono-volume design of the MINI Vision Urbanaut gives new meaning to the “Creative Use of Space” approach. The flush, virtually seamless surface creates a modern baseline mood, with high-quality details adding carefully judged stylistic flourishes. In signature MINI fashion, the wheels are positioned at the outer corners of the body, with short overhangs rounding off a compact and agile appearance.

A new MINI face.

The front end of the MINI Vision Urbanaut represents a clear evolution of two timehonoured MINI design icons – the headlights and radiator grille. Positioned under a milled aluminium structure with slotted openings, the headlights are only visible when switched on. Thanks to their multicolour dynamic matrix design they can display different multi-coloured graphics, which creates a new form of communication between the car and the outside world to suit each moment. The lights on the MINI Vision Urbanaut complement the front “grille” with the attractive look distinctive to every MINI. The enclosed grille itself is now octagonal in shape, representing an evolution of the traditional hexagonal form. Since the MINI Vision Urbanaut does not have a combustion engine requiring cooling air, the grille assumes a new function: it now serves as an intelligence panel for automated driving.

As with the headlights, mulitcolour dynamic matrix rear lights behind milled aluminium covers deliver a fresh aesthetic and present different looks in the various driving modes and MINI moments. On closer inspection, the distinctive, convex surfaces also pay homage to previous MINIs and the classic Mini. One small detail – the contour of the rear windows – references the form of the front grille and underscores the car’s stylistic consistency.

The clear form of the exterior supplies the car’s colours, materials and details with the perfect stage. The matt exterior shade Zero Gravity transitions from a metallic green with blue flip effect to a subtly toned grey. The windows show a pattern in body colour, fading in a gradient from bottom to top. This creates a harmonious transition from the vehicle body to the windows and roof. The pattern also provides a certain amount of privacy without having to darken the windows; the interior remains bright.

Illuminated skateboard wheels provide visual flourishes.

The visual highlight of the MINI Vision Urbanaut when viewed from the side are the wheels, finished in the colour Ocean Wave, a turquoise blue which sparks associations with the beach and the sound of the sea. The abstract Union Jack profile of the wheels is a nod to the car’s British heritage, while their shape recalls skateboards – thereby further highlighting the car’s nimbleness and non-conformist MINI twist. The wheels also represent another way in which the car communicates with its surroundings. Transparent and illuminated from the inside, their appearance changes according to the selected MINI moment.

MINI charms – tactile loveables.

Occupying an exposed position in the C-pillar on the driver’s side are the “charms”. They offer reminders of places travelled, festivals or other events in the form of pins or stickers, and are presented as graphic collector’s items behind glass, as if in a display cabinet. The MINI charms are also an expression of wanderlust and show what the owner has experienced with the MINI Vision Urbanaut – like the stickers on camper vans or badges on walking poles in days gone by. One charm is dedicated to the #Next Gen platform on which the MINI Vision Urbanaut will celebrate its world premiere. Another has a QR code which, when scanned, takes you to MINI.com. In this way, the analogue and digital worlds come together in the car’s exterior as well.  Expressing the MINI moments in the interior and exterior. If one of the three MINI moments is activated by placing the MINI Token in the slots in the table, this is signalled on the outside of the car through the front and rear surfaces and wheel rims. In the interior, the whole geometry – including the seats, the form of the dashboard/daybed and the backrest positions – can be adjusted manually according to the MINI moment selected. The circular instrument display also changes. Fragrance, sound and ambient lighting continue to enrich the baseline mood initiated by the chosen MINI moment.

MINI moment Chill – an oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the city.

In the MINI moment Chill, the MINI Vision Urbanaut becomes a private retreat, an urban oasis. While the rear seat bench (Cosy Corner) invites various seating and lying positions, the backlit Loop above it takes on an appearance inspired by a green forest canopy and can also be dimmed. Ambient music and atmospheric sounds from nature are added to the mix. In the central area, the circular instrument folds down to become a table lamp, eliminating displays or switches that might remind the customer of their automotive surroundings. From the outside, the MINI moment Chill is revealed in the abstract representation of a forest canopy around the headlights, rear lights and wheels.

MINI moment Wanderlust – the joy of travelling together.
Wanderlust is the only one of the three MINI moments where the MINI Vision Urbanaut is actually moving. In this moment, the interior becomes the ideal place for driving the car, or being driven by it, and enables customers to rediscover the romance of travel. The user interface on the central circular instrument adapts its visuals to reflect a world of travel inspired by tourism posters of the 1950s and 60s. Alongside an animation of the route, additional journey information – such as visitor attractions and arrival time – is displayed here for those on board. The Loop above the rear seat bench visualises the feeling of movement with a simulated blur of passing scenery in a mix of orange and turquoise. When the customer wants to drive themselves, a tap of a finger on the MINI logo brings out the steering wheel and pedals. A minimalist parallax display in the dashboard provides route instructions or hazard alerts. There are no other driving-related displays in the dashboard. When automated driving mode is activated, the steering wheel and pedals retract and the driving display disappears from the dashboard. On the exterior of the car, the light graphics in the LED matrix surfaces at the front and rear ends signal whether automated mode has been engaged or the customer is driving themselves.

MINI moment Vibe – celebrating community, sharing moments.
In the MINI moment Vibe, the MINI Vision Urbanaut opens up to people and its surroundings, and provides an experience of togetherness and interaction. Opening the side door and folding up the windscreen creates a welcoming scene that blurs the boundaries between the outside and inside. Amid a colour world of magenta and black with turquoise highlights, the MINI Vision Urbanaut provides a central meeting hub; one which can be either quiet or loud. The central circular instrument becomes a media control centre. An animation of graphic equalizers moving with the music is projected onto surfaces of the front, rear, wheels and Loop above the rear seat bench, creating a pleasant club atmosphere. If those on board so desire, the car could even begin to resemble a boombox.

Digital services connected with the MINI Vision Urbanaut

The concept behind the MINI Vision Urbanaut includes services designed to make using the car an enriching and seamless experience. For example, the MINI Vision Urbanaut can be opened using smart devices – so, in keeping with its status as a mobility option of the future, it can be accessed by anyone within a defined circle of family and friends. Playlists, audio books or podcasts to suit the route and the moment can be explored while travelling in the Wanderlust moment. A personal journey planner displays tips and points of interest (POI) tailored to the individual, as well as recommendations from the MINI Community. These can be proposed and selected as desired.

Sustainable materials and a responsible mindset.

The MINI Vision Urbanaut is characterised by the responsible use of resources. As well as maximum space within a small footprint and the all-electric drive system, the MINI Vision Urbanaut is committed to a responsible approach to materials. This is achieved not only by reducing the number of components in the exterior and interior design, but also by enabling dual functions such as the dashboard/daybed. In addition to the use of recyclates, this also means ensuring that the design is free of chrome and leather. Along with the use of recycled materials, this also means avoiding chrome and leather. The dominant material in the interior is knitted textile, which combines cosiness and quality with softness and comfort. The use of cork on the steering wheel and sections of the floor adds a special touch thanks to its natural feel, and ensures an authentically pleasant interior climate.
