Styling cues from the coastal build scene include a raised handlebar, mini fairing, solo seat and blacked-out finishes.

Bowker Harley-Davidson® is pleased to announce “The Bowker Centenary Edition” has achieved National Finalist status in the UK & Ireland National Round of the 2019 Battle of the Kings custom competition.

Our award was determined by online public voting via the Harley-Davidson® Battle of the Kings website, enabling us to go through to the expert judging panel stage alongside fellow UK finalists Sycamore Harley-Davidson® and Warr’s Harley-Davidson® who won the public voting round.

We’d like to thank everyone who voted for our entry, which placed it third overall and we’re now eagerly awaiting the announcement of international finalists in August to find out whether we will compete with the top entries globally for the BOTK 2019 crown.

The achievement is cause for double celebration at Bowker Harley-Davidson®, as the build celebrates 100 years since our parent company, WH Bowker, was established. The overall design of The Bowker Centenary Edition reflects the styling of founder William Bowker’s first truck purchased in 1919 and the new Anniversary Volvo.

If you’re interested in recreating a similar look, you can find detailed information on the building of The Bowker Centenary Edition here. Alternatively, please call in to the showroom, where our Custom King specialists will be more than happy to discuss your customisation ideas and requirements.

2019 marks 100 years since our parent company, WH Bowker, was established when William Bowker used his war gratuity to buy the first vehicle. Our “Battle Of The Kings” entry for this year tips our visors to our Founder and the design is styled on the new Anniversary Volvo and original Bowker truck.

We chose a Forty-Eight® from the Sportster Range as our base bike. We chopped the back end of the frame off for a simplistic, clean look and fitted a full compliment of Harley-Davidson Brass Collection accessories, plus a range of products from Kinetic Motorcycles.

Harley Davidson Fat Bob crowned Auto Trader’s Best Cruiser Bike of 2018

From the moment Harley-Davidson released information and images of the all-new Softail range, everybody took notice. Blending aspects from the previous Softail models with the outgoing Dyna range, the latest Softail motorcycles promised to deliver a refined shot of Harley heritage and performance by way of modern technology. This promise has proven to be a longstanding and honest one as thousands of new Softail owners will testify.

As if to underline what we already knew, the Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Bob has scooped the award for Best Cruiser from the coveted Auto Trader Best Bike Awards 2018. Now in its fifth year, the Auto Trader awards proved to be bigger than ever this year, featuring more contenders from various manufacturers and across a broad biking spectrum; from touring to trackside toys, to go anywhere adventure bikes and learner legal two-wheels.

The Harley-Davidson Fat Bob was the judge’s undeniable favourite in the Best Cruiser category, beating two other so-called custom cruiser competitors in the final three choices. Auto Trader judge, Phil West put it best by saying: “When it comes to cruisers, there is one name head and shoulders above the rest, and that is Harley-Davidson. A new Softail family for Harley in 2018 is massive news. If you thought Harleys were bikes from a different era, they’re now bang up to date!”

The Auto Trader judging panel rode thousands of miles to test over 36 models and compile the year’s list of the most impressive bikes on the market. Reliability, running costs, appearance, practicality, performance and technical advancements were all considered by the judges as they put together a well-informed list of category winners.

Auto Trader’s Best Bike Awards aim to help every motorcyclist find their ideal motorcycle. With 13 categories and 16 manufacturers, Auto Trader Best Bike Awards 2018 reveal the best machines on two-wheels, whether you’re a first-time rider looking for a humble 50cc, or a rider looking for style, ability and status that only Harley-Davidson can deliver.

Joining renowned motorcycle journalist Phil West on the Auto Trader Best Bike Awards 2018 judging panel was racer and all-round bike enthusiast Andrew Shim, best known as ‘Milky’ in the film and TV series This is England, along with Rob Morphet, Director for Auto Trader Bikes.

So before we all raise a glass in celebration of the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob taking such a major award, let’s leave the final word about the Auto Trader Bike Awards to Auto Trader judge Phil West: “Biking is on its way back with more and more varied new machines on offer than in recent memory. Whatever your taste, whether it’s for fashionable retros, café racers, or ultra-sophisticated sportsters or grand tourers, there’s something out there for you, and the Auto Trader Bike Awards does a brilliant job of directing you to your perfect bike.”

The FXDR 114 is an unapologetic power cruiser that brings a new level of performance to the Harley-Davidson line up. The FXDR 114 combines the unrelenting power of the Milwaukee-Eight®  114ci (1868cc) engine with liberal use of weight-saving aluminium and composite components, including new aluminium swingarm and subframe, lightweight wheels and composite mudguards to amplify every aspect of its agile handling and performance.

The FXDR 114 offers more lean angle than any other Softail model.

Visually, the FXDR 114 communicates its commitment to performance through design inspirations from the drag strip – from a moulded speed screen to a clipped tail section and solo seat. Plans are firmly in place for the eagerly awaited Sportster Weekend here at Bowker Harley-Davidson. Over the weekend of 12-13th May, we will be celebrating the reveal of two new Sportsters, the Forty-Eight Special® and Iron 1200™. Test rides of these two additions to the 2018 Sportster line up will be only part of this special event – all of our demonstrator Sportster motorcycles and more will be fuelled and warmed up ready for free test rides. From Street to Sportster to the new nine-model Softail range and the much admired Harley-Davidson® Touring motorcycles, there will be a Harley available to suit everyone.

Once again, Harley-Davidson has turned up the wick to produce two stunning new Sportsters that deliver performance in a chassis topped with authentic Harley styling reminiscent of the seventies. These classically styled motorcycles represent Freedom to Ride and deliver the care-free ride most folks can only dream about. Packed with modern technology and legendary Harley-Davidson Sportster easy-to-ride quality, is it no wonder so many Harley-Davidson owners started their Harley ownership journey with a Sportster.

You could take our word for it on how brilliant Sportsters are, or you could ask the thousands of today’s Sportster owners. You could also find out why the new Forty-Eight and Iron 1200 are going to be just as well received as Harley’s existing Sportsters by reading what the motorcycle media have to say about them…

Recently, over a two week period in the mountain regions of Croatia, motorcycle journalists from across the globe were riding the two new Sportsters in order to deliver their verdict on these magnificent rolling representatives of Harley heritage. First up for his words on the new Forty-Eight Special is Visordown’s Alan Dowds, who said about his ride:

“Then it’s back out towards the Adriatic and north to our hotel. We’ve calmed down a little, and are cruising along, as nature intends you should do on a Harley. There are some great tunes on my phone, playing through my Ultimate earphones, the sun is blazing down, and the breeze is just the right side of ‘too hot’. It’s time to sit back, enjoy the trademark Harley sound and watch Croatia passing by. Bliss.”

And after a similar riding experience on the Iron 1200, Mr Dowds topped it off with: “…if you’re a fan of the Milwaukee lifestyle, and are thinking about getting in on the deal, either of these new Sportsters will do a great job, for just under £10k.”

John Milbank of BikeSocial arrived in Croatia with a very open mind on riding the new Sportsters – by his own admission he hasn’t had big experience of our beloved American motorcycles. All the same, we get the impression he liked what he saw and rode.

“Okay, they all have a very similar style, but what do you expect of a machine powered by such an iconic V-twin motor. It’s all about the engine, and that goes a long way to setting the look.” Words of wisdom there from Mr Milbank, and there are more:

“Have you noticed how many people moan about all the electronics on bikes these days? Yet many of the same bunch hate Harleys. It’s hard to think of a more pure and unadulterated premium modern motorcycle than a Harley-Davidson; ABS is a legal requirement, but you won’t have to faff about with riding modes, traction control or any of that nonsense here. Fuel injection, yes, but it’s totally unobtrusive. A Harley is all about the ride, and there are no computers to dull that experience.”

You could read these next words from BikeSocial’s first ride experience and be happy with what you see. But there is a whole heap more of similarly balanced views in the review that could make you smile even more: “Personally, it’s the Forty Eight Special that does it for me. I’ve long been a fan of the ‘standard’ Forty Eight, but the higher bars just feel so much more, well, bad-ass. Cruising through the beautiful scenery of our Croatian launch, I couldn’t help thinking just how great all forms of biking are. When I get home I’ll enjoy going fast on my own KTM, but there’s definitely a Harley-Davidson-shaped space in my garage…”

MotorCycle News fired in its first ride report early in the day and its representative Jordan Gibbons covered most areas of the Forty-Eight Special, but went large on the Iron 1200: “The Iron 1200 has been ‘murdered out’, so everything that can be black is. In fact the only colour options are the tank, which is available in three different AMF-Harley-esque paint schemes that all look great (although the white is definitely the pick of the bunch). The Iron’s brooding looks are further enhanced by satin black mini-ape bars and a West Coast style ‘speed screen’. The fastback café single seat and nine-spoke wheels complete the look… If you’ve always fancied an Iron but wanted more go, then this is the bike you’ve been waiting for…”

To avoid the queues and not delay your chance to experience the new Forty-Eight Special and Iron 1200, or any of our fantastic Harley-Davidson motorcycles, please schedule ahead by visiting: test ride booking. Alternatively, call in to our Bowker Harley-Davidson dealership to arrange a test ride with our friendly staff. Remember: Sportster Weekend is 12-13th May. See you there.

Harley-Davidson adds to the long legacy of its Sportster motorcycle line with the introduction of two new models: Iron 1200™ and Forty-Eight® Special. The latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company plans to introduce by 2027, these new high-bar Sportsters combine throw-back styling trends from the custom-bike scene with the solid foundation of the Sportster platform and the punchy performance of the Evolution® 1200 V-Twin engine.

Since its introduction in 1957, Sportster motorcycles have been repeatedly reimagined, in the hands of both the Motor Company and bike owners. The Sportster is a bobber, a chopper, a scrambler and a café racer; a hero on flat tracks and drag strips and road-race courses; and an accessible entry-point for first-time riders, and a custom-of-one cruiser

Setting the new Sportster models apart right from the off are new fuel tank graphics for the Iron 1200 and the Forty-Eight Special, and combine bold colour stripes with a formal typeface, colour and graphic elements originally popular in the 1970s.

TALKING ABOUT THE NEW SPORTSTER MODELS…

Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Styling and Design: “Since its inception, the Sportster has offered the perfect combination of size, power and character that makes it appealing to so many different riders. A Sportster is a relatively easy bike to strip down and reinvent. What we’ve done to create the new Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special is what Sportster owners have been doing with their own bikes for generations.

“The art on the two fuel tanks reflect contemporary trends we are seeing on custom bikes and in design in general, a move away from more complex and intricate art to a look that’s very simple and clean. It’s also important to note that these graphics respect the shape of the fuel tank and, in the case of the Sportster, that tank shape is a classic design element in its own right.”

IRON 1200™ DETAILS

The Iron 1200 recipe starts with power. A 1202cc Evolution® 1200 V-Twin engine delivers 36% more torque (73.0ftlb. vs. 53.8ftlb.) than the 883 Evolution engine that powers the Iron 883, the original urban brawler in the Sportster family. The Iron 1200 brings more punch to the street fight – more power to blast away from green lights and more mid-range to muscle through traffic. More power means more rowdy fun.

The satin-black Mini Ape handlebar is an essential element of the garage-built chopper look that adds instant attitude. This 1.0in (25.4mm) diameter handlebar offers an 8.75-inch rise, 32-inch spread and 6.5-inch pull back, and that opens the rider triangle with a fist-in-the-wind posture. The gloss black speed screen framing the headlamp is a West Coast styling influence that amplifies the attitude of the tall bars. It is intended to offer some wind deflection at speed and provide space for easy personalisation. The fast-back Café Solo Seat flows to the rear fender and is shaped to help hold the rider in position when the torque of the Evolution 1200 kicks in.

A classic 12.5-litre Sportster fuel tank features multi-coloured striped graphics that wrap around the tank profile. The dark engine finish helps draw the eyes to the bright tank graphics. Fuel tank paint colour options include Vivid Black, Twisted Cherry and Billiard White, always contrasting with the Vivid Black speed screen.

The entire powertrain has been styled with a popular color: black upper and lower rocker boxes, black exhaust and muffler shields, and black timer, primary and derby covers. Chrome pushrod tubes and tappet covers are the only brightwork and highlight the V-Twin engine shape. The Iron 1200 is finished with all-black 9-Spoke wheels (19-inch front and 16-inch rear diameter) and a solid black belt guard and rear sprocket.

Pricing for the Iron 1200 starts at £9,395 for Vivid Black. Colour options: £9,645.

FORTY-EIGHT® SPECIAL DETAILS

The burly front end of the Forty-Eight Special – a 130mm front tyre framed by 49mm forks secured in massive forged aluminium triple clamps – looks especially menacing when topped with a gloss-black, 7.25-inch high Tallboy handlebar.

“We specifically selected the Tallboy bar for its shape,” said Brad Richards. “It offers less pull-back than the Mini-Ape, a look that really works with the steamroller front end and the smaller fuel tank on the Forty-Eight Special model.”

That 7.9-litre “peanut” Sportster fuel tank features rows of bold, horizontal stripes framing a simple Harley-Davidson text logo. The fuel tank is available in three colour options: Vivid Black, Wicked Red, and Billiard White.

The Evolution 1200 engine features a black top end and an expanse of brilliant chrome below, including chrome primary, inspection and derby covers, and solid chrome muffler and exhaust shields. Chrome lower rocker boxes, pushrod tubes and tappet covers contrast with the black cylinders to highlight the V-Twin engine shape. High-performance Michelin Scorcher 31 tyres front and rear are mounted on Black Split 9-Spoke Cast Aluminum wheels (16-inch diameter front and rear).

Pricing for the Forty-Eight Special starts at £9,995 for Vivid Black. Colour options: £10,245.

Harley-Davidson has today (07-11-2017) revealed a new Softail® model at the EICMA 2018 motorcycle show in Italy. The all-new Harley-Davidson® Sport Glide™ is the factory custom that can do it all – cruise, commute or tour. And while it draws classic styling cues from the Harley-Davidson Touring range the Sport Glide outlines a compact and contemporary form all of its own.

Sport Glide™ is a quick-change artist, an aggressive factory-custom cruiser outfitted with a detachable fairing and panniers ideally suited for touring, cruising or commuting. The versatile Sport Glide slips stylishly through city streets and is equally ready for short or long-distance weekend runs – an ideal freedom machine.

The ninth model based on the all-new Harley-Davidson Softail® platform and the latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company plans to introduce by 2027, the Sport Glide presents an engaging combination of technology and style. Designed to be lightweight and stiff, the new Softail chassis underpinning the Sport Glide delivers agility and handling performance, while the rigid-mounted Milwaukee-Eight® 107 V-Twin powertrain pumps out a mountain of torque for outstanding acceleration and passing power.

Sport Glide’s fairing is shaped to deflect wind away from the rider’s chest while leaving his or her head in a clean stream of air. It’s secured to the fork tubes with quick-release clamps, making removal or installation fast and easy. Sport Glide will be available in three solid colours: Vivid Black, Twisted Cherry and Silver Fortune.

The new rigid, lockable panniers feature a sleek clamshell design. They’re easy to load and unload and can be opened with one hand by a seated rider. Also the bags can be removed in seconds with an internal quick-release mechanism, leaving behind barely visible mounting points. Combined pannier capacity is 25.5 litres.

Additional luggage capacity can be added with an accessory sissy bar upright, luggage rack or Tour-Pak mounting rack, each with the all-new HoldFast™ detachable latch system designed specifically for the new Softail platform.

A broad, supportive seat and forward-mounted foot controls contribute to a rider triangle designed to fit a broad range of sizes; seat height is set at just 652.7mm. The Daymaker LED headlamp is surrounded by a ring of LED signature lighting and complements the bright LED taillight and rear indicators. A USB charging port, keyless ignition and the Harley-Davidson Smart Security System are standard features.

New 43mm inverted forks deliver precise handling, stability and confident braking performance – which is further enhanced by standard ABS. The Sport Glide rolls on new Mantis cast-aluminium wheels, 18-inch front and 16-inch rear, shod with Michelin Scorcher 31 tyres.

The Sport Glide also features the all-new Softail monoshock rear suspension with remote hydraulic spring preload adjustment, controlled via an exposed knob below the right side cover. It’s thus easy to accommodate the weight of luggage or passenger while maintaining optimal suspension performance and steering geometry.

The blacked-out Milwaukee-Eight 107 powertrain brings a new level of performance and sophistication to Harley-Davidson Big Twin cruisers, including the new Sport Glide. The engine is rigid-mounted in the frame, which stiffens the chassis and connects the rider more directly to the powertrain. A 2-1 exhaust, with sweeping rear header and black exhaust muffler contribute to the bike’s sporty style and enhance cornering clearance. Electronic throttle control enables standard electronic cruise control.

Speaking about the new Sport Glide, Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson’s Vice President of Styling and Design said: “The Sport Glide presents the broad influence of Harley-Davidson design in a very contemporary way. In the new fairing, for example, you can see the influence of the iconic batwing fairing from Harley Touring models, but it’s been trimmed back to create a more compact, sporty shape.

“The Sport Glide project offered us a unique opportunity to utilise a directional wheel, the first of its style to come out of the Harley-Davidson factory on a non-CVO model. The spokes sweep from the hub to the rim to create a sense of motion even when the Sport Glide is parked. The look of motion is reinforced with the shape of the fairing and the panniers, and even the slash-cut exhaust tips.”

The all-new 2018 Harley-Davidson Softail® models have arrived at Bowker Harley-Davidson and are ready and primed for viewing and test rides.

The new Softail range consists of eight totally reinvented Harley-Davidson motorcycles that encompass the riding dynamics of the iconic Dyna® line with the awesome Softail styling that many have tried but failed to replicate.

Featuring the latest 107ci Milwaukee-Eight® engine – with some models such as the legendary Fat Bob® available with an all-powerful 114ci version – in a thoroughly modern chassis, the Softail range go as well as they look. But don’t just take our word for it…

Last week the UK and Ireland motorcycle media got to grips with the new Softail range in the heart of the Montseny mountains, just 45 minutes from Barcelona, Spain. The twisting and undulating roads proved to be fun to ride, moreover they highlighted how exceptional the new Softail bikes really are.

Online specialist BikeSocial kicked off the first ride reviews of the new Softail range with an in-depth report on the all-new Fat Bob®. The bike’s 114ci engine surprised the rider into saying: “There’s proper go in the 114 motor too – the typical thudding Harley exhaust bark is more prominent with less mechanical noise to mask it; pin the bike and it roars like it means it, shoveling great gobs of air through the bores like a drag motor.”

Chris Cope of online motorcycle media RideApart praised the latest Heritage Classic, citing it as “…one of the best big twins Harley’s ever made. More importantly, it doesn’t need to rely on its storied name to be desirable.”

Motorcycle website Visordown also said of the new Heritage Classic: “This bike is great fun to ride, and embodies the classic spirit of Harley-Davidson, in an updated, darker package. You get a lot of bike for your money and there are tons of additional options available.”

But don’t just take their word for it, find out for yourself why the Harley-Davidson custom revolution is a major talking point.

Book a test ride now by calling our showroom on 01772 551838 & get a first and lasting feel for what a revolution is like.
